I was not certain that this was a self-portrait of Sol Tanne or a portrait by one of his colleagues. I consulted Eric Levine, who shared a studio with Sol for many years. He thinks—and I agree—that this is probably not Sol’s work.

The man is the actor Edward Seamon, a member of the Pearl Theatre Company in New York. He was a friend of Sol’s and they played chess together every Saturday. Other paintings of Edward Seamon are Images #0107 and 0159.

I think this is a portrait of the late artist Mai Hoffer, who shared a studio with Sol and was also a graphic designer. She was married to Edward Seamon, the actor, whom Sol also painted.
